The short answer: April, May, October and November. These four months sit between the two trade wind seasons. The seas are calm, the skies are mostly clear, and the beaches are quieter than the peak summer crowds. They are also, in our experience running weddings and honeymoons here year-round, the months when everything tends to go right.
That said, there is no bad time to visit Seychelles. Average temperatures sit around 30°C every month of the year. What changes is the wind direction, the sea conditions on specific coastlines, the price of flights, and how much seaweed ends up on your preferred beach. This guide covers all of it, month by month, so you can match your trip to what actually matters to you.
One practical note before you read on: weather apps and online forecasts are notoriously unreliable for Seychelles. The islands sit seven degrees south of the equator, far from any large landmass, which makes local weather patterns difficult to model accurately. We have seen glorious sunny days in January and overcast afternoons in July. Use this guide for general planning, not as a day-by-day forecast.

The two seasons and the winds that define them
Everything in Seychelles comes back to the trade winds. Once you understand them, the whole calendar makes sense.
Northwest monsoon: November to March Warm, humid winds blow in from the northwest. Rain is more frequent, particularly in December, January and February. The northwest coasts of Mahé and the west-facing beaches take the full force of the swell. The calmer side to be on is the east coast of Mahé and the sheltered bays of Praslin. Sea temperatures are at their warmest during this period.
Southeast trade winds: May to September Cooler, drier winds from the southeast. Skies clear, humidity drops, and the air feels noticeably fresher. The trade-off is that southeast-facing beaches get hit hard. Anse Intendance on Mahé, for example, is spectacular in this season for watching waves but not for swimming. Move to the north and west coasts: Beau Vallon, Anse Étoile, the calmer beaches around Victoria.
The transition months: April and October The wind drops. The sea flattens. Both coasts are accessible. Photography conditions are exceptional. These are the months we recommend most often to couples planning weddings and honeymoons here, and the reason is simple: nothing goes wrong with the logistics.
Month by month: what to expect
January The wettest month of the year on average, but do not let that put you off entirely. Rain in Seychelles tends to arrive as short, dramatic showers, often in the afternoon or evening, and then clear. You can have a perfectly fine beach morning and a downpour at 3pm. Hotel and flight prices are elevated through the festive period into early January, then drop sharply from mid-January. If you visit in January, stay on the east side of Mahé or on Praslin, where the sheltered coasts are calmer.
February Still in the northwest monsoon but noticeably quieter than January. Crowds thin out, prices drop, and the vegetation is at its most lush and vivid green. Excellent for photography. Not the best for rough-sea watersports, but fine for snorkelling at sheltered reef sites.
March The rainy season eases. By mid to late March, conditions start improving noticeably. Seas calm, rain becomes less frequent, and the first divers of the new season start arriving. One of the most underrated months for a quieter, good-value trip.
April Widely considered the best single month to visit Seychelles. Wind drops to almost nothing. Both coastlines are accessible. Visibility underwater is at its peak. The light for photography is excellent: soft, warm, and consistent through the afternoon. Prices have not yet climbed to the May-June peak. If you are planning a wedding and have flexibility, April is our first recommendation.
May Still excellent. The southeast trades start picking up towards the end of May, but the first half of the month feels much like April. Ocean visibility is still high. Towards the end of May you will start to feel the breeze building. Beaches on the southeast coast of Mahé begin to see more swell. Start positioning your accommodation on north or west-facing beaches if you care about calm water.
June The dry season is fully established. Skies are reliably clear, humidity drops, and the air feels clean and fresh. The southeast trade wind, known locally as the Louest, blows at around 15-20 knots. This makes the southeast coasts choppy and rough. However, north and west-facing beaches are still calm enough for swimming. June is excellent for hiking: the cooler, breezier conditions make the trails on Morne Seychellois National Park genuinely enjoyable rather than a sweaty endurance test.
July and August Peak season. European summer holidays drive prices up significantly, sometimes 40-50% above shoulder season rates. Beaches are busier. Book accommodation and packages at least 3-4 months ahead. The southeast wind is at its strongest: waves on the exposed south and east coasts can be dramatic and beautiful to watch, but swimming is for sheltered bays only. North coast beaches on Mahé, Grand Anse on Praslin, and the sheltered bays of La Digue are your friends in July and August.
September The wind starts to ease. By mid-September conditions are improving noticeably. Sea temperatures are slightly lower than the warm northwest monsoon months, which most people find pleasant rather than a problem. A good month for diving as visibility begins to improve again. Prices start dropping from August highs. One of the better months for value.
October Often the best-value excellent month of the year. The southeast trades have largely dropped away. Seas are calm on both coastlines. Crowds are low. Hotels and resorts often have availability and competitive rates, sometimes better than April because it sits outside the main European travel windows. The Creole Festival takes place in October, a week-long celebration of Seychellois culture, music, and food primarily on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. Worth timing your visit around it if you can.
November The northwest monsoon begins building again towards the end of the month. Early November feels much like October: calm, warm, and quiet. From mid-November the weather becomes less predictable. Still a perfectly reasonable time to visit, especially early in the month.
December The festive period brings a surge of visitors and prices spike. The northwest monsoon is back in force by late December. Rain is frequent. That said, Seychelles in December is hardly gloomy: temperatures are at their highest, the sea on sheltered coasts is warm and flat, and the islands have a festive energy that some people love. Book well ahead if you are coming at Christmas or New Year.
Best time for each activity
Diving and snorkelling
The best visibility for diving is during the transition months when wind and current die down: late March to mid-May and mid-September to mid-November. These windows give you the clearest water and the calmest conditions for exploring the outer reef systems.
During the southeast monsoon (May-September), stick to dive sites on the protected north and west coasts of Mahé. The sites off the north tip of Praslin and around Curieuse island also stay accessible. You can snorkel year-round in Seychelles, but during the rougher months choose sites with an offshore reef that takes the swell. Anse Lazio on Praslin and St Anne Marine Park near Mahé work well in most conditions.
Swimming
- Calmest seas overall: November to April (northwest monsoon period) on sheltered east and south Mahé beaches
- Best for north and west beaches: May to October, when those faces are sheltered from the southeast wind
- Year-round safe swimming: bays with protective headlands and offshore reefs, including Beau Vallon (Mahé), Anse Lazio (Praslin), and Anse Source d’Argent (La Digue)
The key thing most visitors do not know: if the sea looks rough at your hotel beach, there is almost certainly a calm beach 15-20 minutes away on the other side of the island. Distances here are short. Do not write off a week because of one choppy coastline.
Surfing and windsurfing
The southeast trade wind season, May to October, is what surfers and windsurfers come for. Anse Intendance on the south coast of Mahé gets a powerful swell and is the best surf beach on the main islands. Windsurfing is excellent on the north coast during this period, where the wind is consistent but the sea is not dangerously rough. Outside of May-October, there is little to no wind for either sport.
Sailing
May to October is sailing season. The southeast trades provide reliable, consistent wind for offshore sailing. Many sailors and charter companies operate specifically in these months. The transition months and the northwest monsoon period are generally considered too light-wind or too unpredictable for enjoyable sailing. If you come to sail, the dry season is your window.
Fishing
October to April is the prime fishing season. The northwest monsoon brings warm, calm water that puts fish in predictable feeding patterns. Yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and sailfish are most active during this period. Game fishing trips run year-round but catch rates are noticeably better October through March.
Hiking
May to September is the most comfortable hiking season. Lower humidity and the cooler southeast breeze make the trails on Morne Seychellois National Park much more manageable. The jungle is still dense and green, and the views from the higher trails can be extraordinary on clear days. You can hike during the wet season, but temperatures above 32°C combined with 80%+ humidity make the uphill sections genuinely hard work. Bring water regardless of the month.
Seaweed: what it is, when it appears, and which beaches to avoid
This is the question we get asked more than almost any other, and most guides give a vague answer. Here is the specific version.
Seychelles seaweed (marine algae) is naturally occurring, harmless, and moves with the trade winds. The problem is that it washes up on beaches in concentrated amounts at certain times of year, and on Praslin in particular it can be significant.
- May to September: the southeast winds push seaweed onto the south coast of Praslin, particularly Côte d’Or and Anse Volbert. The west coast of Mahé and La Digue generally stay clear during this period.
- October to April: the northwest winds bring seaweed onto the Côte d’Or beaches of Praslin, and can affect Beau Vallon on Mahé. La Digue’s west-facing beaches including Anse Source d’Argent are generally clear in this period.
The practical implication: if you are staying on Praslin and seaweed matters to you, choose your accommodation on the sheltered side of the island for the season you are visiting. The long straight coastlines of Praslin accumulate more seaweed than the smaller bays of Mahé and La Digue, which are naturally self-cleaning. A short taxi or bicycle ride will almost always find you a clear beach.
One honest caveat: as weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable, the seaweed calendar is less reliable than it used to be. We have seen October look more like February in recent years. Check with us before you travel and we can give you a current read on conditions.
Best time to visit Seychelles for a honeymoon
April, May, October and November are the best honeymoon months, and the reasons go beyond just good weather.
- Beaches are quieter than July and August, which matters when you want to feel like the island is yours
- Photography light in April and October is exceptional: the sun sits lower, the colours are warmer, and you avoid the harsh midday contrast of the dry season
- Sea conditions are calm enough for most boat trips and island-hopping without seasickness concerns
- Prices are meaningfully lower than peak season, which means you can upgrade your accommodation for the same budget
October is particularly good value. Many five-star resorts have availability and competitive rates that simply do not exist in July or August. If your budget matters as much as your experience, October gives you the best of both.
Best time to get married in Seychelles
If you are combining a wedding with a holiday, the same logic applies but with one additional consideration: your ceremony timing.
Ceremonies in Seychelles are scheduled around tides. Beach weddings run between 10:00 and 16:00 on weekdays. The best photography light is between 15:00 and 16:30, when the sun is lower and the shadows are longer. In April, May, October and November, this late-afternoon window is consistently available and reliable.
In the peak dry season (June-September), afternoon weddings can be quite windy on exposed beaches. We often recommend moving to a sheltered bay or pavilion setting for July and August ceremonies to avoid having to wrestle with the flowers and the veil at the same time.
In January and February, afternoon ceremonies are possible but you need a contingency plan for showers. We always have one.

Peak season vs off-season: what it means for your budget
The price difference between visiting in July and visiting in October can be substantial.
- Flights: July and August flights from Europe can cost 40-50% more than the same route in October or November. December-January also surges due to the festive period.
- Accommodation: peak-season rates at mid-range and luxury properties often carry significant premiums. October and early November are consistently the best-value window for the same quality of room.
- Beach crowds: July and August bring the highest volume of European visitors. If you want Anse Lazio to yourself, do not come in August.
- Booking lead time: for July-August, book accommodation 3-4 months ahead minimum. For April-May, 2-3 months is usually sufficient. October often has good last-minute availability if you are flexible.
One thing that does not change much with season: our wedding package prices. The ceremony packages are consistent year-round.
FAQ
What is the absolute best month to visit Seychelles?
April is the most consistently excellent month. Wind drops to almost nothing, seas are calm on all coastlines, visibility underwater is at its peak, and prices have not yet reached the May-June shoulder season climb. October is a close second and often better value.
What are the temperatures like in Seychelles?
Around 30°C year-round, with a mixture of sunshine and tropical showers. Humidity is generally kept manageable by the sea breeze, though January and February feel noticeably more humid than June and July. Seychelles sits only seven degrees south of the equator, which means online weather forecasts are often unreliable. Local conditions on any given day can differ significantly from what apps predict.
Does it rain a lot in Seychelles?
Rain is more frequent from December to March, but it rarely ruins a trip. Tropical showers tend to be short and intense, often arriving in the afternoon or evening and clearing quickly. June, July and August are the driest months. Even in the wet season, mornings are usually fine.
Are there cyclones in Seychelles?
Tropical cyclones can affect Seychelles, forming south of the equator between November and mid-May, most frequently from late December to mid-April. The main islands, Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, are rarely hit directly. The outer southern islands, particularly the Aldabra and Farquhar groups, carry more risk. In over 20 years of running weddings here, we have never had a ceremony cancelled due to a cyclone on the main islands. That said, it is worth having travel insurance that covers weather disruption.
When is the best time to visit Seychelles for diving?
Late March to mid-May and mid-September to mid-November. The transition between the two monsoon seasons brings calm seas, no wind, and the best underwater visibility of the year. You can dive year-round, but these two windows give you the clearest water.
When is the best time to visit Seychelles for a honeymoon?
April, May, October and November. Calm seas, good photography light, quieter beaches, and lower prices than the July-August peak. October is often the best single month for honeymooners who want five-star quality at a reasonable price.
Is seaweed a problem?
It can be at certain beaches at certain times of year. Praslin is most affected. Mahé and La Digue have naturally sheltered bays that stay cleaner. The seaweed calendar is broadly predictable but not guaranteed. Contact us before you book and we can tell you current conditions at your preferred beach.
When should I book to get the best price?
For July and August travel, book 3-4 months ahead. For April and October, 2 months ahead is usually enough. October in particular often has good last-minute availability. December and early January require early booking due to festive demand.
FAQ
What are the temperatures like in Seychelles?
Seychelles has temperatures of around 30° C all year round, with a mixture of sunshine and tropical showers. Humidity is kept low by the sea breeze. However, Seychelles is only seven degrees south of the equator and far from large land masses in the Indian Ocean. This makes it difficult to predict the weather or rely on online forecasts.
Does it rain a lot in Seychelles?
As Seychelles is located in a tropical area, it sometimes rains, usually in the evening or at night, but usually only for a short time. Usually, December, January, and February are the rainiest months, while June, July, and August are the wettest.
Are there tropical cyclones in Seychelles?
Tropical cyclones can affect Seychelles. They form south of the equator from November to mid-May but occur more frequently from late December to mid-April.
The southernmost outer islands, especially the Aldabra and Farquhar groups, are most at risk. Cyclones are storms with strong winds and heavy rain.
As the northernmost islands, like Mahé, are close to the equator, they are usually spared or only slightly affected by cyclones. Sometimes, however, they are hit harder, as in May 1990 by Tropical Storm Ikonjo and in January 2013 by Cyclone Felleng, which caused major damage.
